Usui Shiki Ryoho Reiki

(Please visit our Reiki FAQ page for more detailed information on the uses and benefits of Reiki).

The Reiki system developed by Mikao Usui is comprised of three degrees or levels, which gradually allow the student access to higher amounts of vibrational energy. All other Reiki systems are based on the original Usui Reiki.

Reiki was brought to the Western world in 1938, and from that time onwards two separate streams of Reiki have existed: a Japanese one where the emphasis is firmly on the meditative and spiritual side of the system, and the more Western-oriented form which emphasises the symbols and attunements. The form of Usui Reiki taught in the West is more properly known as Usui Shiki Ryoho (‘ryoho’ means method) or Traditional Reiki. (Several Japanese schools still teach the original Usui Reiki Ryoho and some of these techniques are also incorporated in this course).

Reiki levels I, II and III are taught together in this comprehensive course, and you will receive all the information and distance attunements required to enable you to practice and teach Reiki. Obviously, you don’t have to become a Reiki teacher once you’ve completed the course! You may simply feel attracted to this form of energy for your personal development. However, if you should wish to teach and attune others at some point in the future, by receiving the full energy now you will always be empowered to do so, as the Reiki energy is a lifetime gift. It is also very healing to be attuned to the complete energy of Reiki.

The attunements are carried out over a 33-day period. Four attunements are given at Level I (on days 1-4), one Level II attunement (on day 15) and one Level III / Master attunement (on day 33).

Level I is primarily about learning how to heal yourself and those physically present. Once you have received the 4 traditional attunements, all you need to do is place your hands on someone or something with the intent to heal and the energy will flow through you. During the 4 attunements, the Reiki symbols are placed in your aura and chakras, but they are not revealed to you until the next level.

At Level I the following topics will be covered: the meaning of the word ‘Reiki’, history and development of Reiki, attunements, self treatment, traditional Japanese techniques, Reiki principles and ethics, full and short treatments of others, group treatments, Reiki circles, and Reiki for plants, animals and inanimate objects etc.

Level II concentrates mainly on absent or distance healing. You will be taught how to heal persons or animals that are not physically present, and how to send energy to a goal or situation. The Level II attunement opens up your energy system further and it is believed that the amount of energy channelled at this level is double that of Level I.

At this level you will learn the 3 symbols, their mantras and how to use them, ethics, techniques for distance healing, scanning, Byosen, emotional healing, and healing with the eyes and the breath etc.

Level III is the highest level in traditional Reiki, and following the final attunement the amount of energy which you can channel becomes much stronger. Third degree Reiki is also known as the Master/Teacher Level, and you are now able to teach and initiate others in Reiki, should you wish to do so.

At Level III you will be taught the traditional and modern versions of the master level symbol, different types of attunements, instructions for in-person and distance attunements, self attunements, and will be given advice on being a Reiki master and teaching courses, plus much more.
